For some, existing with Aspergers Syndrome is a real struggle; never having the ability to fully understand jokes or understand human feelings. The ability to get unhappy or perhaps indignant when certain life scenarios present themselves is part of being a human being. By expressing and feeling emotions we are somehow able to cope with life’s tragedy (and joys) a bit more easily.
When one can’t express themselves on an emotional level it is tough not only for the struggling with Aspergers Syndrome but also their family or intimate partners. The facility to express love is of equal importance as the ability to express pain. But when one is not able it causes distress on all sides. One might argue that it is something that you become used to being around but do you ever actually get used if you’re in a close love relationship with someone that has this disorder and cannot truly express their like to you.
The movie, “My name is Khan”, gives an interesting insight into the life of someone with Aspergers. .It shows a person living in the shadow of the 9 11 bombings and struggling with social disabilities. Many times he is proven to be socially ungainly wrestling with a combination of private and formal relations.
He’d been upset since a young age when his mum died and always struggled across the movie to cope with death or the thought of people dying. Just the reference to somebody dying spins Khan into an injury. He struggles with elementary things like having the ability to tell his better half that he likes her or understand the idea of a joke. Many times he is also shown to have trouble to deal with body contact such as shaking hands. There is also one scene on his wedding night where he fights to become intimate with his wife.
As well as illustrating the negative parts, “My Name is Khan” also demonstrates the gift of genius that it can also bring. In the motion picture he often demonstrated his fantastic capacity to fix damaged mechanical and electronic gear.
I suspect the film is a good portrayal of folks existing with Aspergers as it illustrates both the highlights and lowlights of the disorder. One thing is very clear though is that for Khan, just understanding that he has Aspergers will make life slightly easier for him. After taking an Aspergers Syndrome Test, he was able to explain his status brazenly to others as such dispelling any misconception folks could have about his bizarre peculiarities.
Toward the middle and end of the flick it is clear that thru enjoying more close connections with people and being open with his state with his status does improve. He may not fully understand the intricacies of social dynamics but he begins to develop an awareness of them.
